CCSS Events Overview (May - June) |
At the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS), we always believe in the added value of bringing different ideas and expertise together through various activities. We would like to welcome you back at our centre and have scheduled the following events: |
Science Jam #61: Climate stress-test: lessons learned, steps ahead |
Time: 12:00-13:00, Thursday May 8 (with lunch). Speaker (in-person): Prof. dr. Irene Monasterolo, Climate Finance (UU) Content: Irene will outline the characteristics and advantages of a forward-looking approach to climate stress-test, which has been developed in academia and increasingly used by financial institutions, for both physical risks and transition risk. |
CCSS Meeting #73: Defining and measuring socioeconomic resilience |
Time: 15:00-16:00, Thursday May 22 (with drinks afterwards). Speaker (online): Dr. Stéphane Hallegatte, Chief Climate Economist (World Bank) Content: Stéphane will summarize a series of studies that use various approaches at household or firm level to measure socioeconomic resilience and guide, target and prioritize interventions to protect people against the negative impact of shocks and disasters. |

Science Jam #62: Temporal Networks of Human Interactions |
Time: 12:00-13:00, Thursday June 5 (with lunch). Speaker (in-person): Prof. dr. Jari Saramäki, Department of Computer Science, Aalto University, Finland Content: Jari will reflect on their research into the structure and dynamics of social systems as captured by networks and processes that unfold on them. He will show how the temporal networks framework has revealed new insights into human communication and behavior and the formation and maintenance of social ties. |
Science Jam #63: When Models Fail: Using Prediction Gaps to Reveal Hidden Social Structures |
| Time: 12:00-13:00, Monday June 23 (with lunch). Speaker (in-person): Dr. Javier Garcia Bernardo, Methodology and Statistics (UU) Content: Javier will introduce the concept of prediction gaps—differences in performance between statistical models of increasing complexity—as a diagnostic tool to identify where conventional theories and models fail to capture the hidden structure of social outcomes. |
