How may academics and bottom-up initiatives mutually strengthen each other's impact? Do we mean the same thing when using the word 'impact'? Do we have similar expectations on how we realise it? And how does such co-creation between academics and societal partners actually work?
These are the questions we will address at our Impact Day 2024. This is a day for academics, social entrepreneurs, bottom-up initiatives and policy-makers in the city of Utrecht and the surrounding region: specially for making connections, developing cooperation and reciprocal alignment!

Professor Bacq will leverage insights from two decades of research on social entrepreneurship to discuss co-creation for positive societal change. She will highlight the importance of the civic level of analysis as a lens through which to explore common ground and form joint projects. She will share recent findings about the many roles that communities and civil society actors can play in co-creation models, including in defining the problems at hand and co-designing solutions. Leveraging classic theories and principles of collective action, Professor Bacq will stress that collaboration across sectors, and inclusive of communities, is essential for achieving long-lasting societal change. She will introduce the Civic Wealth Creation framework that brings together three key stakeholder groups— Community, Enterprise, and Regimes of Support—and examines wealth created for a community beyond money and material possessions. |
1. Inclusion: How can you actively involve stakeholders, such as bottom-up initiatives, within the research process?
Moderator: Karin Geuijen Partners: Gemeente Utrecht, Thuis in Oss, Red Cross, Centraal orgaan Opvang Asielzoekers, De Thuisgevers, Business Models Inc., Hogeschool Utrecht (lectoraat netwerksamenwerking), Universiteit Utrecht (dept. Bestuurs- en Organisatiewetenschap)
Policies concerning migration and refugees have become stricter and more restrictive in the Netherlands. At the same time, there are many bottom-up initiatives focusing on better integration and housing in local communities, and on more inclusion and participation in the job market and education. Unfortunately, even the most succesful operations stay local and thus the initiatives in the Netherlands are fragmented. This results in less impact than they can potentially have.
- How can succesful innovations be strengthened and scaled up through better cooperation between local initiatives, refugees and citizens, COA, businesses and the municipalities?
- How can co-creation of the required knowledge be used purposefully by these various organisations and people? Can researchers take on a role to quicken this process?
2. Mapping entrepreneurial ecosystems: How can the integration of academic knowledge and practical experience help with upscaling local initiatives?
Moderators: Niels Bosma, Arjan van Dorsselaer Partners: Gemeente Utrecht, Impact030, Hogeschool Utrecht
To what degree does the current 'entrepreneurial ecosystem' inhibit or benefit the occurance and growth of impactful businesses in Utrecht? What elements can be improved in the coming years? In this interactive session, we will work on the identification and visualisation of new insights and possible follow-up actions. The 'mapping tool' we will use in this session is the basis for the discussion. The results will also serve as input for the participatory learning session organised in 2025 as a part of the SCENTISS project (featuring the additional partners City deal Impact Ondernemen and Social Enterprise NL). 3. Co-creation, case study Gemeente Utrecht: How can you co-create research questions with societal partners? What benefits and effects does co-creation have on research outcomes and impact for involved partners?
Moderator: Helleke van den Braber Partners: Gemeente Utrecht, department of Culturele Zaken (Cultural Affairs)
The focus of this session lies on illuminating the cooperation between the department of Culturele Zaken (Cultural Affairs) from the Gemeente Utrecht (Municipalities Utrecht) and Utrecht University (UU). We will discuss questions such as:
- What potential does Cultural Affairs see in UU-research with regards to their work on private-public cooperation? Cultural Affairs wants to stimulate private-public cooperation and is looking for a new definition of their own intermediary role in this process.
- What new knowledge is need for this? What does Cultural Affairs expect of UU and what not? To what degree can UU fulfill these expectations?
- What motivates the UU in her research for Cultural Affairs? What role does the impact of the research play in this?
