30 years of Teacher Awards at UU |
‘That Utrecht University has been awarding the Teacher Awards for 30 years means that education is very important to our university’ says Leen Dorsman, emeritus professor of university history and winner of the 1999/2000 Outstanding Teacher Award. Together with the 2007/2008 winner, emeritus professor of psychology Liesbeth Woertman, he looks back on 30 years of Teacher Awards and teaching at UU. |

‘In Utrecht, there is attention and appreciation for teaching as an academic task’ |
In the 1990s, Utrecht University began a ‘teaching offensive’. Research had become so dominant in university careers that the quality of teaching began to suffer. UU invested in teachers and initiatives by individual teachers to improve teaching found their way to the entire university. Some Utrecht ideas even fell on fertile ground nationwide, such as the Basic Teaching Qualification used by all Dutch universities since 2008. These efforts have not gone unnoticed. In a recent international survey, UU was most often cited as an example by experts in the education field.

Students as teachers: How does that work at other universities?
|
Students are increasingly providing teaching activities at higher education institutions. Using these Students as Teachers (or SATs) can be of great added value for the educational organisation, provided they are well prepared and have defined tasks. The Student Qualification Education (StuKO) project mapped the success factors, and produced a booklet with inspiring examples of how SATs from different educational institutions are supervised and trained. |

Eight Community Engaged Learning projects provided with funding |
This fall, eight projects have been honoured with a grant from the Community Engaged Learning Support Fund. In these projects, students and teachers work together with external partners on social issues, ranging from working with Bellingcat on open source investigations to collaborating with international partners on highlighting stories from Queer history. |
From the Teaching and Learning Collection |
Do you already involve your students in the evaluation, development or delivery of your teaching? |
Involving students in your education can be done with different roles, at different levels and in different ways. Within Utrecht University, there are many initiatives where students are used in innovative ways to shape or improve education together. These initiatives are collected in the Teaching and Learning Collection. Do you have another great initiative? Then please contact cat@uu.nl. |

Leadership in Culture (LinC) is a successful curriculum for professionals. From evaluation research, USBO has extracted seven design principles. Paul Adriaanse: ‘These design principles contribute to the effectiveness of our LinC programmes, but they may also be relevant for other courses for professionals.’ They include slowing down & zooming out, workability, diverse work formats, alternative perspectives, reflection, continuous guidance and working in and with networks. |
