For some 50 years the role of women in the art world is a topic of research. Yet you still find them too little in historiography, art and museums. How do you ensure awareness of the gendered perspective and sustainable embedding of the female narrative in a museum context?

'Shattered Ceilings' is about current museum ambitions, role models, gender diversity and about quality. International museum professionals from the New York Historical Society, the Nationalmuseum Stockholm, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the National Portrait Gallery London, among others, will share their experiences and expertise. After three sessions, there will be room for discussion and exchange of views.

Themes

We reflect on initiatives for more inclusive representation, the importance of the criterion of quality and how female work is shown. This will be done in three sessions:

  • Looking up: Role models
  • Untold histories: The question of gender
  • The Elephant in the Room: Quality

Programme

Annual symposium

Women in the Museum is a series of annual symposiums organised by the Rijksmuseum as part of the Women of the Rijksmuseum project. The 2022 symposium 'Best Practices' was mainly about many initiatives that embed the gendered narrative in the museum world.

This project is made possible in part by the Susi Zijderveld Fonds, the Family Krouwels Fund, the Machteld Vos & Willem Sijthoff Fund, the Heleen Dura- van Oord Fonds, the Kind Courage Monique Maarsen and the ‘Women of the Rijksmuseum’ Fund.
