Dear reader,
For many of us at IMAU, doing fieldwork is among the highlights of our academic jobs. And it’s therefore that I am really excited that NWO and NIOZ have started the procedure for building the R/V Anna Weber-van Bosse, our new ocean-going Dutch research flagship. So that more of our MSc and PhD students interested in physical oceanography get the opportunity to go to sea and experience the beauty of the open ocean for themselves.

Measuring nanoplastics – a new research line at IMAU
|
I remember the day when my colleague, Dusan Materic, came up with the idea to use our proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) to measure sub-micron plastic particles, so called nanoplastics, in the snow samples that we collected at the top of the Mt Sonnblick in Austria.

Current climate model simulations overestimate future sea-level rise
Using a new, higher-resolution climate model simulation, IMAU scientists found a much slower ocean temperature increase compared to current simulations with a coarser resolution.

Roles Beyond Research: Climate Scientists in Society
|
Should climate scientists contribute to the public debate on climate and sustainability? And if so, what are ways to do this? This is the topic of many colloquia, panel discussions, and Twitter threads in the climate science sphere. PhD Candidate Daan Reijnders gives his opinion.

The fresh predictions by sea level simulations, smoke from fires in Australia rose extremely high and Greenland was once ice-free.
Check the overview of media appearances from our scientists. Most articles are in Dutch, but quite a few are in English.
