Nominations, selection and regulations

The application round for the eight generation of the Utrecht Young Academy (UYA) is currently open. The deadline for submitting the nomination form to uya@uu.nl is November 25, 2023. This year, candidates are nominated by (vice-)deans, directors of strategic programmes, PhD-councils, members of De Jonge Akademie and former UYA members. Last year, academics at Utrecht University could nominate themselves.

The UYA currently has 44 members. Each year, an additional 8 members are selected for a period of 5 years. The UYA is looking for enthusiastic, young UU-researchers (between 0 and 8 years after receiving their PhD degree; an extension clause may apply*) who are committed to contributing to UYA's mission and activities in the coming 5 years. UYA is not per se looking for academic excellence, but more so for people with a broad interest, who like to look past the borders of their own research discipline.

The UYA aims to be inclusive and to have a diverse representation of academics in its group of members. Diversity encompasses for UYA a number of aspects such as, but not limited to, academic background, cultural background, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, and sexuality. With this approach, we aim to increase the participation of individuals from underrepresented groups in academia.

The UYA endorses the broader recognition and rewarding of academic activities as elaborated within the framework of Open Science and the vision on Recognition and Rewards at Utrecht University. When selecting new candidates we will also take the candidate's role in the Open Science debate and vision on Recognition and Rewards into consideration.

*In some cases, an extension clause may be applied. The period of eight (8) years can be extended with an additional two (2) years, in the case of demonstrable prolonged periods of leave in relation to illness, parenthood, pregnancy, or care. An extension is also possible if the candidate: a) has a part-time appointment in combination with caring responsibilities; b) is completing or has completed specialist medical training as recognized by the KNMG; or c) has taken compassionate leave in combination with a specialist medical training.
