CCSS Events Overview (May-June)
At the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS), we always believe in the added value of bringing different ideas and expertise together through various activities. We would like to welcome you at our centre and have scheduled the following events:

CCSS Societal Discussion #14: The Generative Revolution in the Age of Complexity
Time: 12:00-13:00, Thursday 25 May (with lunch)
Speaker (onsite): Dr. Ton Jörg, the author of two books on Complexity, was affiliated as educational evaluation researcher in diverse national projects in the Netherlands.
Content: Ton will share his view on generative complexity, which is based on the complexity of interaction between two interacting entities, and can be modelled within a causal framework.
CCSS Masterclass on Ecological Networks
Time: Monday-Wednesday, June 5-7
Lecturer (onsite): Dr. Phillip P.A. Staniczenko (City University of New York)
Content: Ecological networks represent species as nodes and biotic interactions among species, such as feeding, parasitism, seed dispersal, and pollination, as links. Phillip will survey the history of ecological networks, traverse hot topics in contemporary research, and explore exciting paths for future work.
Meeting Details:
10:00-12:00 Lecture (with possibility of interval)
12:00-13:00 FREE lunch for all participants
13:00-15:00 Hands-on tutorials (lecture 1&2)
Registration is currently closed as full capacity has been reached.

CCSS Meeting #57: A Factor Analysis of Emission Intensity
Time: 12:00-13:00, Thursday 8 June (with lunch)
Speaker (online): Dr. Prof. François Lafond is a leading researcher at the Institute for New Economic Thinking, within the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford.
Content: François will show his most recent research on Greenhouse gas emissions using tools from econometrics and from complex systems.
CCSS Colloquium: Is the Atlantic Overturning Circulation approaching a tipping point?
Time: 16:00-17:00, Thursday 8 June (with drinks)
Speaker (onsite): Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf is Co-Head of the Research Department on Earth System Analysis of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Professor of Physics of the Oceans at the University of Potsdam.
Content: Prof. Rahmstorf is going to give his answers to the question of how close we already are to this tipping point.

Young Complexity Researchers’ Lunch (YCRL) #9: We do not like too much water, but we can stand it - a modeling study of plant responses to waterlogging
Time: 12:30-13:00, Friday 26 May (with lunch)
Speaker: Jerry Chen, Biodynamics and Biocomplexity
One-sentence summary: Jerry will explain how he used a toy model to investigate different plant strategies in response to waterlogging, show the results and discuss potential approaches to couple this flooding response model to the SPAC model.
Young Complexity Researchers’ Lunch (YCRL) #10: Are Causal Structural Discovery techniques ready to be used to improve inference for exposome studies?
Time: 12:30-13:00, Monday 19 June (with lunch)
Speaker: Salome Kakhaia, Exposome Data Science & Disease Prediction (UMCU)
Content: Salome will discuss how in the absence of complete prior information on the causal relations between different exposures and individual risk factors, Causal Structure Discovery (CSD) is likely to play an important role in shifting exposure science from primarily association-based, targeted analysis towards agnostic, causal reasoning, and new discoveries.

Reopen: Swaantje Mondt travel fund call 2023-2024 for PhD candidates
Are you a PhD candidate at UU or outside NL who is currently working on complexity research? Would you like to visit a foreign research institute or the CCSS in NL to further develop your research skills? The Swaantje Mondt Fund will provide you a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and develop new research skills on complexity with max. €2500/research visit.
Deadline: June 11th 2023, 23:59 hrs
Key conditions:
- The research of the applicant should focus on complexity research from an interdisciplinary perspective.
- The applicant is a PhD candidate either (co-)supervised/invited by at least one of the CCSS Associate Members.
- The length of the visit should be at least one month.

Summer School 2023: Introduction to Complex Systems (21-25 August)
Each year the CCSS offers a summer school for students worldwide. Through lectures, computer simulations and mini-projects, the students get an inspirational introduction to complex systems. The main aim is to show students how complex systems science is applied by Utrecht University researchers to challenging societal problems.
