Motivation and self-management
A tutor is expected to guide students in developing their study skills and good study behaviour. This usually concerns matters such as studying effectively, (study) motivation, planning and an independent attitude to study. Students have particular difficulty in regulating their own study behaviour; how do you deal with long-term obligations versus short-term temptations? How can you contribute to this as a tutor and how do you ensure that the responsibility for study progress remains with the student?
Objectives
After the workshop you will be able to:
- explain, using accessible models, which factors influence motivation and self-management,
- explain what students need in order to motivate themselves and steer their behaviour in the direction they want,
- design goal-oriented teaching methods that will enable you to effectively address these issues in your own tutoring practice.
Suitable for
Tutors/lecturers, study advisors, study career counselors and Deans.
Fee for UU lecturers
Lecturers of Utrecht University can use O&T units (if available) or can otherwise participate at reduced rates. In either case in consultation with their own faculty.
