POSTPONED - Symposium 'Hansards in the World'
 
 
Due to the effects of the covid pandemic, the symposium 'Hansards in the World: Continuity and Discontinuity on the Intellectual, Cultural, and Economic Frontiers of the Early Modern Hanse’, originally scheduled for January 2022 will now take place on the postponed dates 12 and 13 May 2022 at the University of Amsterdam. Hansards in the World gathers and promotes new histories of the Hanse, an association of European merchants and towns, and how they interacted with the wider world in the early modern period.

Unfortunately, the world is still confronted with the effects of the COVID-pandemic. Due to the current situation in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other countries, the COVID-pandemic and measures taken by governments and institutions may also affect activities organised by or in cooperation with the N.W. Special sessions on Historical Demography at 13th Conference of Young Demographers (Charles University)
 
 
With support from (inter alia) the N.W. Posthumus Institute a special day/afternoon full of historical demographic research from young historical demographers will be organised at the 13th Conference for Young Demographers, to be held (hybrid) 1-4 february 2022 at the Faculty of Science of the Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. Online Colloquium ‘The Impact of Climate and Weather on the Premodern Provision of Food and Water’
 
 
On 16 February 2022, members of the N.W. Posthumus Research Network Societies in Context: Interactions between humans and rural-urban environments will organise the online colloquium 'The Impact of Climate and Weather on the Premodern Provision of Food and Water: New Historical Perspectives on Resilience and Vulnerability'. In this colloquium, several researchers will approach the topic of climate and weather-induced stress on water and food provision by looking at the interaction of these levels of resilience and vulnerability through a number of case studies related to both rural and urban societies. Attendance is free, registration is however required.

The N.W. Posthumus Institute is happy to announce its 2022 Conference, which is scheduled for 30 June-1 July 2022 and will be hosted by the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. The Posthumus Conference is an annual event, which combines presentations by Posthumus PhDs in an advanced stage of the PhD programme with Research Network meetings and lectures by prominent scholars within the field of Economic and Social History. Workshop ‘Globalisation and Long-Run Development in Asia and Africa (ca. 1800-2000)’
 
 
On 23 and 24 June 2022, members of the N.W. Posthumus Institute Research Network ‘Globalisation, Inequality and Sustainable Development in Long-Term Perspective’ will organiose a workshop on the theme ‘Globalisation and Long-Run Development in Asia and Africa (ca. 1800-2000)’. Keynote speaker at this event will be Professor Deepak Nayyar, Emeritus Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. The workshop will be hosted by Wageningen University and Research. More info will follow in due time.

Valedictory speeches Professors Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden on 15 June 2022
 
 
In September 1992, Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden took office as part-time professors of Economics and Social History at Utrecht University, sharing this chair. This experiment will come to an end on June 15, 2022, which will be marked by valedictory lectures in the Domkerk, Utrecht. More details will follow in due time, but we ask you to save this date in your schedule from 3 pm.
 
 
 
 
 
Workshop 'Politics and Consumption’
On 11 and 12 February 2022, the Centre for Urban History, the Centre for Political History, and the N.W. Posthumus Institute will jointly organise the two-day workshop ‘Politics and consumption in the modern age: New research perspectives’ at the Stadscampus of the University of Antwerp. This workshop aims to reunite scholars who empirically investigate what we broadly define as ‘politics of consumption’ in core as well as peripheral European regions and the Atlantic world encompassing several time periods ranging from the early-modern era until the present day.
 
 
 

Workshop 'Languages of Consumption'
On 3 and 4 February 2022, the Universities of Antwerp and Basel will jointly co-host the Workshop 'Languages of Consumption in the 18th and 19th Centuries' in Basel Switzerland, aimed at fostering knowledge of the languages of consumption in this era of critical transitions. It will do so by bringing together and discussing new perspectives across a broad range of languages and regions, also welcoming contributions beyond the Atlantic World.

4th Conference of the European Society of Historical Demography (Madrid, Spain)
 
 
The 4th ESHD conference is to be held on 2-5 March 2022 in Madrid, Spain. Leading theme is ‘Human–environmental nexus in the past: understanding links between demographic variability, ecology and disease’. Participants are encouraged to engage with and link across three different streams of historical social science analysis: the diversity of historical demographic behaviour across space and time; the study of historical health, disease, and morbidity conditions; human-environmental interactions in the past. Early Registration is still possible until 30 January 2022, Regular Registration closes 19 February 2022.

On 14 January 2022, Posthumus-alumnus Amaury de Vicq de Cumptich succesfully defended his thesis 'Exploring the Dynamics of Small and Local Financial Institutions. The Case of the Netherlands, c.1860-1940' at Utrecht University. Promotor of Amaury were Professor Oscar Gelderblom and Professor Joost Jonker. We congratulate Amaury with this result.
 
 
 
 
 
 
PhD Defence Teuntje Vosters (Leiden University)
 
On 25 January 2022, Posthumus-alumna Teuntje Vosters successfully defended her thesis 'NGOs and Refugees in European History: Assessing NGO influence on international refugee policy making, 1919-1979' at Leiden University. PhD supervisors of Teuntje were Professor Marlou Schrover and Dr Irial Glynn. We congratulate Teuntje with this achievement.
