Critical Pathways, a vibrant community within Strategic theme Pathways to Sustainability (Utrecht University), has just announced four residency opportunities for autumn 2024. Our aim is to amplify voices that are currently underrepresented within our #university yet possess the potential to enrich our academic ecosystem. What is the relationship between (global and local) power dynamics and sustainability? What are ways to move from Anthropocentrism to Ecocentrism? How can we envision and make tangible post-capitalist sustainable futures? And how can we advance global justice through sustainability transitions? We encourage applicants to craft proposals that align to these questions central to our community. Sinds september vervul ik de functie van studentassessor bij het Faculteitsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen. Soms vergeet ik even stil te staan bij hoe cool deze functie is! Als onderdeel van een betrokken bestuur dragen we gezamenlijk zorg voor de faculteit, en houd ik me als studentassessor voornamelijk bezig met de portefeuilles studentzaken, onderwijs en studentenorganisaties. Wat ik dan concreet doen? Dat is elke week anders, en juist dat maakt het zo leuk. Maar een paar projecten waar ik heel trots op ben: 💥 Sinds januari zijn er in alle gebouwen binnen de universitaire binnenstad all gender toiletten te vinden (met ook dank aan de inzet van Marijke Bakker)! 💥 Voor alle studentenorganisaties van de faculteit hebben we een kennisbank ontwikkeld met handreikingen en documenten, om zo kennisuitwisseling en informatieoverdracht te stimuleren 💥 Elke tweede vrijdag van december is het Paarse vrijdag, en daar heb ik een campagne omheen ontwikkeld: https://lnkd.in/e4JjSNSj Maar misschien wel het meest waardevolle aspect van de functie is het aansluiten bij overleggen op allerlei niveau's en het vertalen van een studentenperspectief naar de beleidstafel. Van beleidsmedewerkerts tot de Raad van Toezicht en van maatschappelijke partners tot natuurlijk het Faculteitsbestuur: dit perspectief is belangrijk. Ik ben op zoek naar iemand om het stokje over te dragen en volgend academisch jaar deze mooie functie te vervullen. As Israel once again steps up its strikes across Gaza this week, Marijn Hoijtink, Linde Arentze and I reflect on how AI is increasing the speed of targeting and scale of civilian harm in Gaza in unprecedented ways in our latest article for The Conversation UK. As AI is increasingly being employed across theatres of war and in densely populated urban contexts, we conclude that we must consider the ability of these systems to alter the human-machine-human interactions; where those executing algorithmic violence are merely rubber stamping the output generated by the AI system, and those undergoing the violence are dehumanised in unprecedented ways. Vandaag publiceren Vic van de Reijt, Lisa Lucassen, Miles Philip Niemeijer, Mijke Sekhuis en ikzelf een opiniestuk in de Volkskrant over muziekerfgoed - met deze goede foto van Dorus als mascotte. Het is hoog tijd dat we de verschillende collecties platen, bladmuziek en ander muziekerfgoed in Nederland gaan veiligstellen en integreren. Het materiaal is kwetsbaar, terwijl er veel interesse in is. Het mooiste zou het zijn wanneer we gaan werken aan een publiek toegankelijke website waarop al dat moois terug te horen is. Tijd voor verdere actie!

Leven mensen langer, gezonder en gelukkiger in een #democratie? Welke rol speelt de leefomgeving op onze gezondheid? Het is inmiddels velen duidelijk dat gezondheid en veerkracht te maken hebben met gedrag én omgevingsfactoren: waar we wonen en werken, wat we eten, welke sociale interacties we hebben en welke leefstijl we hebben. Naast gezonde leefstijl wordt steeds meer de gezonde omgeving van belang. Hoe vullen we deze in? Hoe zorgen we dat iedereen mee kan doen in het maken van een gezonde omgeving? Welke kennis gebruiken we bij het maken van gezonde omgevingen? Is dat de kennis van experts en bestuurders of telt de kennis van bewoners ook? On April 30 Penn University, the Section of Cultural Affairs & Information (Ministry of Defence) and Utrecht University are co-hosting an expert meeting on the nexus of war and heritage with special attention to Ukraine. This event is organised in the context of the 70th anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. We look back and forward in time, and highlight the role the Netherlands has and should play in the protection and rebuilding of heritage in the context of conflict. The event will be opened with a keynote by Lynn Meskell, followed by a round table discussion with Dewi van de Weerd, Linda van der Pol, Edwin Maes and Marieke Droogsma.
