The N.W. Posthumus Institute and the Fryske Akademy jointly invite you to the 2024 edition of the Annual Posthumus Conference. This year's edition will take place on 23 and 24 May 2024 at Campus Fryslân in the Frisian capitol city of Leeuwarden. The central theme of the Posthumus Conference is 'Regional History in a Global Context'. Next to the keynote lecture the programme offers several parallel sessions of our Posthumus PhDs presenting their research papers, as well as thematic meetings of the research networks of the N.W. Posthumus Institute. And of course, lunches, the conference dinner, as well as the guided tour of the historical prison Blokhuispoort and closing drinks also offer you the opportunity to meet your fellow researchers and students in a more informal setting. Keynote lecture by Professor Nikolaus Wolf

The organisers of the 2024 Posthumus Conference are happy and proud to announce that this year's keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Nikolaus Wolf, Chair of Economics and Economic History at Humboldt University Berlin. Professor Wolf is an economic historian with interests in trade, economic geography, international macroeconomics and social identity. He previously held positions at the University of Warwick, Free University Berlin and the London School of Economics and is currently a Research Fellow at CEPR (International Trade and Regional Economics and Economic History). Between 2013-2019, he was Editor in Chief of the European Review of Economic History. In 2018, he was awarded the Frisch Medal (joint with Gabriel Ahlfeldt, Stephen Redding, and Daniel Sturm), for the best applied (empirical or theoretical) paper published in Econometrica during the previous five years, for their article 'The Economics of Density: Evidence from the Berlin Wall'. According to the award report the paper 'breaks genuinely new ground in the modeling of cities and the spatial organization of economic activity'. More info on the keynote will follow in due time. |

The 2024 edition of the Annual Posthumus Conference will be hosted by the Fryske Akademy under the guidance of senior researcher Hanno Brand. As a future-oriented network institution, the Fryske Akademy conducts, shares and facilitates scientific research on the Frisian case in an international and multidisciplinary perspective. This concerns both fundamental and applied research. The focus is on Frisian, multilingual society, regional history in an international perspective, minority languages and cultures and the development of digital infrastructures - preferably in a cross-disciplinary and comparative perspective. The N.W. Posthumus Institute thanks the Hanno Brand and his colleagues of the Fryske Akademy for their hospitality. Please note: the main venue of the conference will not be at the premises of the Fryske Akademy, but at the Campus Fryslân of the RUG, Wirdumerdijk 34.

The Fryske Akademy and the N.W. Posthumus Institute kindly invite you to to the conference dinner on 23 May. The dinner will take place at Restaurant De Koperen Tuin, located in the pittoresque Prinsentuin in Leeuwarden's city centre. The dinner starts at 18:00 sharp and will also be the stage for the diploma ceremony for the Posthumus PhDs who completed their Basic Training Programme.
Participation is free, but prior registration is required. Important: in order to avoid food spillage, we kindly ask you only to register for the dinner if you really intend to join. In case you are not sure yet, no problem: in that case, please indicate now you are not joining and just send us an e-mail of you change your mind later on (we rather have an extra plate than an empty chair :)).
To facilitate the ordering process, the restaurant has already drawn up a conference menu, offering a variety of both vegan and non-vegan options. Although the conference is still some time away, please indicate your menu preferences when you register.

Limited offer: after-conference guided tour of Blokpoort
|
The Posthumus Conference 2024 will be (in)formally concluded by after-conference drinks in the Blokpoort, a historic former prison complex. For those interested, a guided tour will be offered by a local guides, (often a former prison guard). Because of safety prescriptions, a maximum of 20 participants can join this special tour, starting at 15:45 on the final conference day. Because of the maximum of 20 participants, prior registration is required, participation will be on first come, first served basis. You can indicate this with your registration.
