ChatGPT in education: can you still use take-home exams and essays?

The new chatbot ChatGPT has been in the news frequently in recent months. The impact on education is also much discussed and especially what the consequences are for assessment. Can you still have students write essays? And what do we do with take-home exams that have already been used before? Can we still reliably assess writing skills? Assessment experts and educational experts of the UU answer these questions in this article. They also wrote an article on what ChatGPT is capable of, and what its limitations are.

Event interdisciplinary education on 16 March

The Interdisciplinary Education Programme (IDO) is organising an event on 16 March 2023 around the institutional dimension of interdisciplinary education. The programme has invited Finnish researchers Yuhzuo Cai and Antti Lonnqvist to speak about their research on managerial roles in establishing and implementing interdisciplinary education programmes. At this event, we want to explore how this dynamic is expressed at UU and what we can learn from Cai and Lonnqvist. The event will take place on Thursday 16 March 2023, in the Boothzaal in the University Library (Utrecht Science Park), from 12:00 to 18:00 including lunch beforehand and closing drinks.

Practicing conversational skills with DialogueTrainer

Would you like for your students to be able to practice having conversations, for example a bad news conversation or consultation? Then perhaps DialogueTrainer can be useful for you! DialogueTrainer is an application that can be used as preparation for practicing professional conversational skills face-to-face. Teachers can easily create their own simulation in which a virtual character responds to the student's choices, with both text and emotion, and provides feedback. Would you like to know more? Please join the workshop on 16 March and read the experience of lecturer Richta IJntema who has implemented the tool centrally and extensively within the Psychology programme.

Utrecht University hands out first microcredentials

On Friday 27 January, Utrecht University awarded microcredentials for the first time. A microcredential shows what knowledge, competences and experience a participant has gained. The awarding is therefore a nice step towards gaining legal recognition for short-term education for professionals. Recipients of the microcredential followed an introduction to Dutch literary history with Professor of Early Modern Dutch Literature Els Stronks. Participants brush up on professional knowledge so that they can then enrol in a first-degree teacher training programme. Want to know more about microcredentials?

Get inspired to use games in your teaching

Are you already using games in your teaching, or would you like to start using them? Please join the Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting of the SIG Game Based Learning on 21 March from 15:15-17:00. During the meeting, three colleagues will show examples of how they already use games in their teaching and share more about this. There will also be time to exchange experiences, discuss what issues you might face and brainstorm ideas. This meeting will take place at the Utrecht Science Park.

Future Learning Spaces: teachers and students want more!

It is well known that interactive and activating teaching and learning has a positive influence on the learning process and outcomes. The layout of learning spaces plays an important role in this: from the Future Learning Spaces project, various teaching spaces within the UU have been developed that enable interactive and activating teaching and learning. Meanwhile, the necessary experience has been gained within Future Learning Spaces, and an evaluation has been carried out to provide insight into results, to better support teachers and students in using the spaces and to optimise the spaces even further. Curious about the outcomes? Take a look at the report.

Utrecht University wants to encourage cooperation between teachers, students and community partners. Active learning activities

Active learning ensures increased engagement, motivation, and understanding among students. How do you stimulate active learning among students in your teaching? The Teaching and Learning Collection describes many active learning activities which you can apply in your teaching, such as Think-Pair-Share, where students think about questions both individually and together, or Quescussion, where questions can only be asked in the form of an answer during a discussion. Take a look at the active learning activities and see which ones you can apply in your teaching.
