Dear UBC,
With brand new academic year just underway, and the hustle and bustle returning to the Science Park after a period of Summer holidays, we are looking forward to many new developments and initiatives for UBC members.
We’re very much looking forward to a new edition of our annual UBC Symposium, which is scheduled for 11 October 2023. The symposium is set up as a way to connect the bioinformatics community at Utrecht Science Park. It enables all UBC members to exchange knowledge and expertise, as well as discuss the latest progress in our field. So please register and join us for a great day of science and networking!
As always, keep an eye out for future UBC webinars and other events to connect with (and learn from) your bioinformatics colleagues. We wish you a great start of the academic year, and look forward to all exciting results, collaborations, and connections that may arise.

Meet UBC Board member Ronnie de Jonge
|
Earlier this year, the UBC Board welcomed several new members. One of the new board members is biologist Ronnie de Jonge from Utrecht University. In an interview on the UBC website, Ronnie elaborates on his research and its connections with bioinformatics. Ronnie’s field of research increasingly relies on bioinformatics to unravel the immense complexity of interactions between plants and microbes. For instance, his team tracks how micro-organisms –both beneficial and harmful ones– operate and impact plants in nature and agriculture.

Dutch Cancer Society grant for Geert Kops |
UBC member Geert Kops, director of the Hubrecht Institute and professor of Molecular Tumor Cell Biology at the UMC Utrecht, received funding from the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). His group will use the grant to investigate the role of large-scale chromosomal changes in the development of colorectal cancer. Ultimately, this could contribute to new methods for detecting and treating colorectal cancer in an early stage. |

Webinar about High Performance Computing facility (HPC) |
The UBC kicked of its monthly seminar series with an introduction to the recently extended services available through the UBC High Performance Computing facility (HPC) by Ies Nijman. The webinar was attended by 70 participants and also featured UBC Board member Jayne Hehir-Kwa, who gave a quick guide on how to use work flow managers on the HPC. A recording of the webinar is now available, for those who weren't able to join or would like to review it.

Integrative Genomics - The 9th UBC Symposium |
The UBC Annual Symposium is the best place to meet fellow UBC members and other inspiring researchers. Embracing integrative genomics as a main theme, this year's edition features three keynote speakers, multiple pitch talks, poster presentations, and of course plenty of opportunities to connect. Registration is now open (and free!). UBC members are also encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster presentation at the symposium, which is a great way to promote your bioinformatics research, gain more exposure, and offers a ticket to win a cash price of 150 euros.

Webinar: Learning the language of adaptive immune recognition |
In the next UBC webinar, dr. Alex Yermanos from the Center for Translational Immunology at UMCU will share his most recent bioinformatics-related research. Yermanos' team aims to integrate experimental and computational principles of immunology to understand, predict, and engineer adaptive immune recognition in preclinical and clinical settings such as infection, vaccination and disease.
