Being born close to the sea, I have fallen in love with the ocean since I was a child. A firm goal of my summer holidays is to be at or near the sea. As an ocean and (polar) climate scientist and marine sciences teacher, I keep observing nature, even when I’m on holiday, observing people's behavior, and trying to interact and connect.
I have travelled along the coast of Sicily first and then to my hometown, Ravenna, in Italy, during the warmest July ever recorded. The weather extremes that took place there have taken headlines in the international news this year and some of my friends in Ravenna have not yet made it back to their homes. I’m a positive person, but for the first time in my life, I found it very hard to sprinkle optimism.
I have noticed that people are better informed and deeply concerned about the climate. They are willing to change, many have already changed their habits, but they are confused. Some are frustrated because they feel their personal change won’t have consequences until politicians take a clear and honest turn towards sustainability. Mankind is, we all are, the key to change.
I firmly believe that educating people on climate and sustainability issues, at all levels, is the glimpse of hope. With this thought I join and strengthen my commitment to Pathways to Sustainability and I find fuel for the academic year that is coming.
Wishing you all the best for the new academic year.
Kind regards,
Francesca Sangiorgi,
on behalf of the Pathways to Sustainability team

SUSTAINABILITY DIALOGUE - THE URBAN-RURAL DIVIDE |
The urban-rural divide is of all times, but seems to be increasingly mentioned in diverse discussions in recent years. What is it about when people talk about a divide? To what extent is there actually a divide or are urban and rural areas more intertwined than thought? We discuss these questions using themes such as food, nature and culture in the province of Utrecht.
