~ because of scope, only in Dutch ~ Van 25 tot en met 27 augustus 2022 vinden in Rotterdam de KNHG Historicidagen plaats. Op het programma staat een rijke variatie aan sessies en presentaties; bij een aanzienlijk aantal van deze sessies en presentaties zijn studenten en / of fellows van het N.W. Posthumus Instituut betrokken. Het N.W. Posthumus Instituut is ook als instituut zelf betrokken bij een van de sessies. Samen met het Huizinga Instituut en de Onderzoekschool Politieke Geschiedenis organiseert het N.W. Posthumus Instituut de labsessie ‘Onderzoeksscholen zonder grenzen? Mondiale perspectieven in de praktijk’. In dit lab zullen onder meer de volgende vragen centraal staan: Hoe passen wij in onze onderzoekspraktijk een mondiaal perspectief toe? Hoe passen we global history toe in het curriculum (R)MA studenten en promovendi? In hoeverre heeft een mondiaal perspectief onze kijk op geschiedschrijving fundamenteel veranderd?
 
 
 
 
 
Writing Retreat successfull new element in Posthumus PhD Training Programme
 
 
Recently, nine Posthumus PhD candidates joined the N.W. Posthumus Institute Writing Retreat. The Writing Retreat, originally initiated as a 'home away from home' during the covid period, for the next years forms an optional part of the PhD Training Programme, offering Phd Students an opportunity to focus on writing in a quiet, yet inspiring environment. This year 's edition was held at the premises of Meeting and Conference Centre Soeterbeeck, a former monastery in Ravenstein, close to Nijmegen; for the 2023 edition, a similar location will be available. The 2022 participants all indicated to have enjoyed this opportunity.

Call for papers Datini-ESTER Advanced Seminar 2023: ‘Economic Exchanges’ – deadline abstracts 15 October 2022
 
 
Fondazione Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica “F. Datini” and the European School for Training in Economic and Social Historical Research (ESTER) will organise their sixth jointly-organized Datini-ESTER Advanced Seminar for economic and social historians on 14-20 May 2023, in Prato (Italy) on the theme of “Economic Exchanges”. The topic of the seminar is closely related to the theme of the congress organized yearly by the “F. Datini” International Institute of Economic History, which in 2023 is devoted to ‘Alternative Currencies. Commodities and Services as Exchange Currencies in the Monetarized Economies of the 13th to 18th Centuries’. Abstracts for the 2023 edition are due by 15 October 2022. If accepted for participation, the final paper will be due on 15 March 2023.
 
 
 
 
 
Masterclass Professor Eithne Luibhéid - Leiden University, 14 July 2022
 
 
On 14 July 2022, Professor Eithne Luibhéid will give a masterclass at Leiden University. This masterclass is organised by Posthumus PhD candidate Jamel Buhari MA and Professor Marlou Schrover and forms a unique opportunity for PhD students working to interact on a personal level with this important author. Professor Eithne Luibhéid is Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona and a key author on the connections among queer lives, racialization processes, state immigration controls, and citizenship. At this masterclass, you will able to present your research in progress and receive feedback on this from both Professor Luibhéid and fellow participants. Participating in a masterclass is also one of the requirements for the Posthumus Advanced Training Programme.

The Ghent University Research Group "Social History since 1750" in collaboration with the N.W. Posthumus Institute is hosting the masterclass 'Between Integration and Expulsion: Actors, Practices and Subjects of Migration Control in 19th- and 20th-century Europe', delivered by Dr Beate Althammer, postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of African and Asian Studies at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, specialised in the history of migration, migration control, crime, poverty and social policies. The masterclass 'Between Integration and Expulsion: Actors, Practices and Subjects of Migration Control in 19th- and 20th-century Europe' offers PhD candidates and early-stage post-docs the opportunity to discuss their research with an expert in the field. Workshop 'Digital mapping for historians with QGIS' - Utrecht University, 4-5 October 2022
 
 
A map can be an excellent way to visualize your research, but only a small percentage of people know how to make them. Have you been wanting to learn more about digital mapping for your research, but do not know where to start? Or struggle to make time to teach yourself? This workshop may be for you! In this workshop, which is made possible by the N.W. Posthumus Institute, the HiDo Scientific Network for Historical Demography, and the Quetelet Center, attendees will be taught the essentials of digital mapping using the world's most popular open source application QGIS. By the end of this two half-day hands-on workshop, you will be able to combine different types of data to create your own historical maps for use in papers, presentations and other sessions. Vanaf 29 juni ‘s avonds tot en met 1 juli 2022 vindt het Maascongres 2022 plaats. De editie van dit jaar heeft als thema ‘De Limburgse Maas: historisch rivierlandschap met toekomst’ en vindt deels in Maastricht en deels in Maaseik plaats. Het programma omvat diverse lezingen, filmmateriaal en diverse excursies. Historicidagen/Historians' Days 2022 - 'Grenzeloze Geschiedenis/History Beyond Borders'
 
 
From 25 until and including 27 August 2022, the annual Historicidagen/Historians' Days will be held in Rotterdam. The event showcases the many diverse and dynamic ways of doing history. Through a wide spectrum of lectures, debates and workshops, the Historians’ Days tackles issues and challenges on the frontline of historical research and public debates. Keywords of the conference include networking, inspiration, orientation, career and relaxation. The Historians’ Days 2022 evolve around the theme of History Beyond Borders, and actively promote diversity within participants, audience, program, stories, methods and presentations.
 
 
 
 
 
XIX World Economic History Congress (Paris, 25-29 July 2022
 
 
The 19th World Economic History Congress will be held in Paris on July 25-29, 2022. The Congress will address “resources” as one of the main challenges of the contemporary world. The Congress will comprise sessions on all the categories of resources, that is natural, material, immaterial and human (work and skill): water, air, energy, food products, raw materials, labour, capital, patents etc.The program will involve a large set of approaches in economic history including social history, urban and rural history, history or economics of finance, sciences and technologies, gender history, cultural history, etc. as well as crossovers with other disciplinary fields. The call for papers has already been closed, but registration as non-presenting participant is also possible. A participation fee applies.

The PhD position is linked to the research project The Social History of Finance. The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Antwerp is offering a full-time PhD position in historical household finance. The PhD position is linked to the research project The Social History of Finance. As PhD candidate you will work on the creation of the Hisfindex – a historical version of the Global Findex that measures financial inclusion in the world today. The aim is to find out which financial services were used by households between 1920 and 2020. The EOS research project “Construction History, Above and Beyond. What History Can Do for Construction History” is currently looking for 3 PhD candidates and 3 postdocs, who can start between 1 October and 31 December 2022. The individual trajectory of each researcher is embedded in this larger team, operating in the three universities (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel). Each researcher will be situated in one of the 3 fields of dialogue: (1) colonial history – construction history; (2) legal history – construction history and (3) planning history – construction history. Utrecht University is seeking a candidate for a PhD project titled “Cooperation, Cooperatives and Development”. The project, through a historical analysis of the cooperative enterprise, seeks explanations for the drivers of stable and sustainable cooperation. The candidate will examine these issues in a comparative framework, focusing on participation in cooperative enterprises across South Asia, South-east Asia and West Africa between 1900 and the present-day. Aside from research commitments, the PhD candidate is expected to participate in the SCOOP PhD Training Program, as this project forms part of the transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research program SCOOP: Roadmaps to Resilient Societies. Lund University is recruiting a doctoral student (4 years, fully funded) in historical demography (PhD in Economic History). The Senior Research Fellow will carry out research work in an independent manner and collaborate on the research work of the project.
