Posthumus Conference 2024 |
On 23 and 24 May 2024, the Posthumus Conference 2024 was held at the Campus Fryslân in Leeuwarden, hosted by the Fryske Akademy. This year's edition focused on the theme 'Regional History in a Global Context'. Over 85 participants in total attended the conference, enjoying an inspirational keynote lecture by Professor Nikolaus Wolf (Humboldt Universiuty Berlin), various PhD presentations on a wide range of research topics, as well as thematic research network sessions. At the conference dinner, certificates for completing the Basic PhD Training were handed out to those from PhD-cohort 2022 present (see photo). Thanks to the hospitality of Hanno Brand of the Fryske Akademy as well as the team of Meryem Riad, beadle of Campous Fryslân, we can look back at a successful conference; we are already looking forward to the 2025 Conference, of which we hope to reveal the location in one of the forthcoming newsletters!

Posthumus Summer School 'Crises and History' (Utrecht, 1-5 July 2024) - deadline 1 June 2024

This summer, the N.W. Posthumus Institute offers a 5-day Summer School on the topic of ‘Crises and History’ (Utrecht City Centre, 1-5 July 2024). Crises are not a new phenomenon: past societies also faced them. How these societies coped with crises, or why they failed to do so, is a topic that increasingly draws attention from historians. During this one-week summer school students acquire the knowledge and skills to develop their own research ideas on this theme and select and use the methods and sources to carry out the research. Participation is free of charge; completion of the course is valued at 2-3 EC. For full details, check out the course info on our website via the button below. ESTER RDC 2024 to be held in Münster (Germany), 30 September-2 October 2024 - Call for papers, EXTENDED deadline 1 July 2024

From 30 September until 2 October 2024 the ESTER Research Design Course (RDC) 2024 will be held at the University of Münster. The 2024 RDC will be hosted by Dr Christine Fertig and her colleagues in close cooperation with the N.W. Posthumus Institute. ESTER is the acronym of the European graduate School for Training in Economic and social historical Research, a Europe-wide network of leading scholars in the field of social and economic history, established in 1991 by the N.W. Posthumus Institute, currently involving 60 universities, offering high-level research training for PhD candidates in an international context. PhD candidates in economic and social history are invited to submit a paper for presentation at the RDC. The Centre for Urban History (University of Antwerp) and the N.W. Posthumus network Economy and Society of the Pre-Industrial Low Countries in a Comparative Perspective jointly organise the workshop ‘A peek into the neighbours’ garden’ on Friday 15 November 2024. The intention of this workshop is to provide a forum for work in progress or recently finished work on the Low Countries and to approach these new research developments from a comparative angle. Everyone who wants to present recent research about the social and economic history of Belgium and the Netherlands is invited to submit an abstract of no more than 500 words before 15 August 2024 via e-mail to Dr Wout Saelens. The decision on the submitted proposals will be communicated to the applicants soon after that deadline. Participants just wanting to attend without presenting are admitted on a first come, first served basis, space permitting.

NWO Summit Grant awarded to SOCION consortium
|
The SOCION-consortium, a consortium of scientists in Social Studies and Humanities (among whom Posthumus-affiliates Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk, Selin Dilli, and Maanik Nath) researching social cohesion, has been granted a NWO Summit Grant (30 mio euro) by the Dutch Research Council (FWO). Summit Grants are intended for research consortia that already have proven its academic and societal value, as SOCION haas done via inter alia the SCOOP program. Through the SOCION-consortium psychologists, historians, demographers, philosophers, and sociologists join forces with societal organisations to gain insight in connections between individuals, groups, and institutions in order to develop new ways in building and strengthening social cohesion. The N.W. Posthumus Institute congratulates Elise, Selin, Maanik and their consortium partners with this award!

Posthumus alumni awarded Postdoc Mandates by FWO |
Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) recently has awarded Postdoc Grants to several Posthumus alumni. Both Amaury de Vicq de Cumptich and Sam Geens have been granted a Junior Postdoc Fellowship, Ruben Peeters was awarded a Senior Postdoc Fellowship. The N.W. Posthumus Institute staff congratulates Ruben, Amaury, and Sam with this recognition. |

Fruitful ESTER Datini RDC in Prato
|
On 12-18 May 2024, The Datini-ESTER Advanced Seminar 2024 took place in Prato, Italy. This year's edition focused on the theme of 'Social and Geographic Mobility' and hence was closely connected to the preceding study week 'Social Mobility in Pre-industrial Societies: Tendencies, Causes, and Effects (13th-18th Centuracies' of the Datini Insitute. At the Datini-ESTER seminar fifteen PhDs and early career postdocs from universities in Spain, Sweden, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium delivered high quality paper presentations and academic discussions, making the seminar to a fruitful event, to which the beautiful weather also contributed. The theme for the 2025 Datini-ESTER seminar will be on the issue of 'finance'; the call for papers for that event is to be expected within the next few months.

Conference ‘Recolonising Empires during the Cold War: Transitional Social Movements and Social Policy in Post-Colonial Areas' (Utrecht (hybrid), 30-31 May 2024)

On 30 and 31 May 2024, the (In)Equality Platform of Institutions for Open Societies at Utrecht University will organise a conference on ‘Recolonising Empires during the Cold War: Transitional Social Movements and Social Policy in Post-Colonial Areas’. Main organisers are Professor Marco van Leeuwen (Utrecht University) and Dr Michele Mioni (University of Bamberg). This conference will be hybrid, you can attend this conference on location or via specific Teams links. The organisers recommend those who want to attend the conference on site, to register as soon as possible, as seating is limited. Middeleeuwen Symposium 2024: 'Het onmisbare boek: handschriften en druk in de Late Middeleeuwen' (Zutphen, 21 juni 2024)

~ because of scope, in Dutch only ~ Op 21 juni 2024 vindt in Zutphen het Middeleeuwen Symposium 2024 plaats met als thema ‘Het onmisbare boek: handschriften en druk in e Late Middeleeuwen’. Onderzoekers uit Nederland, België en Frankrijk vertellen onder leiding van dagvoorzitter prof. dr. Johan Oosterman, hoogleraar Oudere Nederlandse letterkunde aan de Radboud Universiteit over de sociaal-economische netwerken rond boeken, de diverse productiemethoden en -centra en de manier waarop schrijvers, drukkers en boekbezitters informatie probeerden te ordenen en ontsluiten. Op 20 juni 2021, daags voor het symposium, is tevens gelegenheid tot deelname aan excursies en het bijwonen van lezingen in de Collegetour. Voor deelname aan het Middeleeuwen Symposium 2024 en/of Collegetour geldt een bijdrage, voor studenten geldt een gereduceerd tarief.

Moving Humanities Conference 2024: 'Resistance' (Radboud University, Nijmegen, 31 October - 1 November 2024; deadline abstracts 31 July 2024)

The Moving Humanities Conference 2024, organised by Radboud University and Groningen University, will take place on 31 October and 1 November 2024. This year’s theme is ‘Resistance’ taken in its broadest sense, both within subjects of research and the humanities itself. Resistance can be to the common way of understanding things, to other positions and interpretations, to change, or as a subject in itself. The organisers are now calling for abstracts (300 words max., excluding bibliography) for talks and poster presentations from (research) master and PhD students and will give special consideration for those which fit the broad theme of ‘Resistance’. Abstracts should be submitted ultimately 31 July 2024.

PhD course 'The Versatile Interior' (Royal Danisch Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark, 27-29 November 2024) - deadline abstracts 15 September 2024

The PhD School of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts is offering the PhD course 'The Versatile Interior' on 27-29 November 2024. This PhD course aims to explore interiors as versatile, ambiguous and complex phenomena. How such complex phenomena can be grasped and comprehended will be discussed through genuine and rigorous analytical discourse. Several examples will be presented forming the basis of the course and these will be studied through academic texts. In addition, there will be an excursion to a local museum where interiors are reconstructed to further inform the discussion. Participants are asked to submit a draft paper describing examples of versatile interiors that will be discussed in a group format. Participation in the course will be awarded with 3 EC. For participants form outside of Denmark, a participation fee may apply. Abstracts should be submitted by 15 September 2024.

PhD Defence Posthumus alumna Sietske van der Veen (Utrecht University, 31 May 2024)

On 31 May 2024, Posthumus alumna Sietske van der Veen will defend her PhD thesis ‘Novel opportunities, perpetual barriers: patterns of social mobility and integration among the Jewish Dutch elite, 1870-1940’ at Utrecht University. Promotores are Professor Lex Heerma van Voss (Utrecht University), Professor Leo Lucassen (Leiden University), and Profeesor Karin Hofmeester (IISH and University of Antwerp). Attendance on-site is on invitation, the PhD defense will also be broadcasted as livestream (see button below). The N.W. Posthumus staff wishes Sietske a successful defence.
