Laten we eens beginnen met een korte test: sluit je ogen. Als ik nu het woord ‘wetenschapper’ zeg, welk beeld komt er dan naar voren? Houd dat beeld even vast. Verandert het beeld als ik zeg: ‘natuurkundig onderzoeker’? Wat zie je dan? Het zijn helaas geen achterhaalde vragen. In de korte video The UU’s Science Type vertellen drie jonge vrouwelijke onderzoekers van niet-Europese afkomst over de vooroordelen die zij tegenkomen – en over de vooroordelen waarmee zij zelf zijn opgegroeid. Deze drie bèta- en geowetenschappers staan niet alleen, en gelukkig zijn ze niet de enige vrouwelijke onderzoekers in hun vak. Maar ze zijn wel in de minderheid en moeten zichzelf steeds bewijzen. In een ideale wereld zou het niet moeten uitmaken welke gender je hebt, waar je vandaan komt of hoe oud je bent, maar welke kennis en vaardigheden je bezit en hoe je je wilt ontwikkelen. Gelukkig is de wereld altijd veelkleuriger dan onze verwachtingspatronen en al die (onbewuste) beelden die we met ons meedragen. En gelukkig kunnen wij onze beeldvorming veranderen, omdat wij ook steeds weer door die veelkleurige werkelijkheid worden verrast. In de aanstaande diversiteitsmaand gaan wij de stereotypering te lijf. Tijdens Meet the Professor op 22 maart gaan alle hoogleraren weer naar de scholen om de leerlingen te laten zien dat een professor ook maar een heel gewoon mens is. Daarnaast organiseert het EDI Office weer verschillende activiteiten. Kom ook en laat je verrassen!

| Hoe inclusief zijn onze denkbeelden, ons handelen en ons taalgebruik? Op die vragen richten we ons met onze activiteiten op de Internationale Vrouwendag van 8 maart: een paneldiscussie over stereotypering in de wetenschap en twee workshops. Verder in de maand staan verschillende trainingen en bijeenkomsten in het programma, en op 27 maart reiken we de Diversity & Inclusion Award 2023 uit. Raadpleeg het programma en schrijf je snel in.

| In het nieuwe magazine lees je over onze resultaten en activiteiten in 2022. Centale onderwerpen waren inclusief onderwijs en toegankelijkheid. Zo vertelt hoogleraar Bruce Mutsvairo over het belang van luisteren naar stemmen ook van buiten de academische wereld en legt promovendus Maranke Wieringa uit waarom toegankelijkheid altijd maatwerk is. Promovendus Moska Hellamand - op de voorkant - deelt het verhaal van haar weg naar de Mozaïek 2.0-beurs, die haar promotieonderzoek mogelijk maakt. Ook blikken we terug naar de diversiteitsmaanden en andere activiteiten.

| Van Incluusion Traineeship naar betaalde baan
|
| Negen statushouders rondden in 2022 hun Incluusion-traineeship af. Acht van de trainees vonden vervolgens een baan binnen of buiten de universiteit. Ondertussen zijn acht nieuwe trainees gestart en werkt Incluusion aan het matchen van nog eens vier plaatsen.

| Net uit: Key Concepts in World Philosophies
|
| Chiara Robbiano, lid van de EDI Stuurgroep en universitair hoofddocent aan het University College Utrecht, publiceerde onlangs haar nieuwe boek Key Concepts in World Philosophies. Het boek, geschikt zowel voor de specialist als voor de nieuwsgierige beginner, leidt de lezer door verschillende continenten en tijdperken. Het brengt samen de bijdragen van 45 wetenschappers, waaronder vele uit het Zuiden. In hun bijdragen behandelen zij kerngedachten van centrale Indiase, Chinese, Japanse, Islamitische, Afrikaanse, klassiek Griekse, inheemse en moderne Europese denkers.

| Bijeenkomst van diversiteitsnetwerken
|
| De allereerste jaarlijkse bijeenkomst voor alle diversiteitsnetwerken vindt plaats op 21 maart in de Vagant. Uitgenodigd zijn ook de facultaire netwerken. Ben je lid van een diversiteitsnetwerk en wil je ook komen, neem dan contact op met Anne-Marie van Gijtenbeek, coördinator diversiteitsnetwerken.

| Het EDI Office organiseert in maart verschillende trainingen op het gebied van diversiteit en inclusie. In de training 'Active Bystander' gaat het om het leren herkennen van signalen van grensoverschrijdend gedrag en de acties die je kunt ondernemen. Op 23 maart vindt de training tweemaal plaats voor medewerkers en eenmaal voor studenten. Nieuw is de training 'Dilemmaspel: train-the-trainer' op 21 maart, waarin je spelenderwijs leert het dilemmaspel te faciliteren. En op 28 april vindt de workshop 'Inclusief taalgebruik' plaats. Meld je snel aan, want er is beperkt plaats.

Let’s start with a brief test: Close your eyes. If I now say the word ‘scientist’, which image pops up in your mind? Hold on to that image. Does it change if I say: ‘researcher in natural science’? What do you see now? Unfortunately, these questions are not out of date yet. In the short video The UU’s Science Type, three young female researchers of non-European origin tell about the prejudices they’ve met with – and about the prejudices they’ve grown up with themselves. These three scientists do not stand alone with their experiences, but, fortunately, they are not the only female researchers in their field. However, they certainly are minority, and have to prove themselves times over. In an ideal world, your gender, place of origin, or age wouldn’t matter, but only your capacities and how you develop them. On the positive side, the world is always more varied than we’d expect, or (unconsciously) imagine. And what is more: Our imagery is prone to change, when we let ourselves be surprised by the world in all its colours. During the coming diversity month, we’ll tackle with stereotyping. In Meet the Professor on 22 March, all full professors will again visit schools to show students that a professor is a person just like anyone else. Also the EDI Office will organise various activities. Join to be surprised!

| How inclusive is the way we think, act and talk? This is the main focus of our activities on the International Women's Day on 8 March: a panel discussion on sterotyping in science and two workshops. | The annual overview presents our results and activities in 2022, with a special focus on inclusive education and accessibility. In his interview, Professor Bruce Mutsvairo explains why we should listen to voices also from outside the academia, and PhD candidate Maranke Wieringa calls attention for the importance of tailored solutions in making the university more accessible. Moska Hellamand (on the cover) tells about her way to the Mosaic 2.0 scholarship that made her PhD research possible. | From Incluusion Traineeship to Paid Job
|
| Nine status holders finished their Incluusion Traineeship in 2022. Eight of the trainees found a job within or outside of the university. Meanwhile, eight new trainees have started and Incluusion is working on matching another four candidates.

| New: Key Concepts in World Philosophies
|
| Chiara Robbiano, member of the EDI Steering Committee and Associate Professor at University College Utrecht, has just published her new book. It is recommended reading for specialists as well for interested beginners. Crossing continents and running across centuries, Key Concepts in World Philosophies brings together contributions of 45 scholars, including many from the Global South. Their articles discuss core ideas associated with major Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic, African, Ancient Greek, Indigenous and modern European philosophers.

| Training courses in March
|
| The EDI Office is organising a number of training courses on diversity and inclusion topics in March. The training course 'Active Bystander' is about recognising inappropriate behaviour and learning how to signal it. On 23 March, this training course will be organised twice for staff members, and once for students. In 'The Dilemma Game: train the trainer' on 21 March, you'll play the game and learn how to facilitate it, and on 28 March, you're welcome to join the workshop 'Using inclusive language' for Dutch speakers.
