It is early June and the sun is shining. High time for the recap of the Canal Pride!
Perhaps first a little history of this special day: The first Pride was organised in 1970 and was a tribute to the Stonewall riots, a fierce protest by the New York LGBTQI+ community against police brutality. Pride has since become a combination of both protest and celebration, with more and more employers and organisations turning colour. This year, there were as many as 50 participants!
Together with HU, UU had a boat with as many as 100 sailors representing their community. The organisation was excellent. All the bobos were there, there was champagne and a vegan lunch, there was good music, the boat was as green as possible, a tribute to activism, and the weather gods joined the party. Of course: we are far from there. Discrimination unfortunately still exists, and the increasing figures of violent incidents against LGBTQI+ people show an upward trend in this regard. All the more important to make this protest heard and show this celebration of diversity. All the more important that you are allowed to be who you are, that you are valued for who you are. Just be you at UU.

Diversity Dean

| UU'ers about the Canal Pride
|
This year, Utrecht University again participated in the Utrecht Canal Parade together with Hogeschool Utrecht. Multiple of our colleagues joined on the boat and reflect on the day:
“The Utrecht Pride: being yourself in a cheerful, sunny environment. The event was top notch again.”
- Johan Dr Rozenbrand, Assistant Professor for the faculty of Science.
“Sailing along in Canal Pride opened my eyes: each of the ninety people on the UU-HU boat has a different story and in their own way calls attention to fundamentally human issues such as safety, understanding and love. As a lecturer at UU, I think it is important for our students to be able to feel heard, seen and understood for those issues too, and to underline that, I sail with them. This year's theme was 'What if love is the masterplan?' - I have seen a greater sense of pride in many students sailing along than I sometimes see at master's degree ceremonies. It reminds us that we are educating people and not a biscuit factory.”
- Dr Martijn van Beek, Assistant Professor of Architectural History
Elias Abou Chaaya, event manager at the EDI Office, also looks back on the day. You can read about his experience by clicking the button below.

| Trainee Ahmad and supervisor Laurens share their experiences with the Incluusion Traineeship: a programme for status holders in which they gain work experience at UU. Ahmad started his traineeship at the University Library, where Laurens had been working for years. Afterwards, Ahmad found a paid job, as have the other eight trainees from 2022 who completed their traineeships. In 2023, 10 new trainees started working at UU.
