Leaves are finally falling after this unusual warm autumn. The yearly dance on climate negotiations start on Sunday, this year in Egypt at the COP27, the climate conference organized by the United Nations. IPCC finished a new cycle of reports, the science has spoken, the options are at the table and confirmed once more. At the same time more and more scientists argue that the goals of the Paris agreement are already unfeasible. Scientist Rebellion makes the case, but in fact the mainstream supports it. Discussion in Egypt will focus on who has to pay for what. The infamous loss and damage discussion will get afloat or strand again. In two weeks, we will know more.

At home in the Netherlands we recently learned once more that we can technically solve the challenges posed by sea level-rise for a while, but we also got reinforced that mitigation is a must. But it requires change. Signs for behavioural changes are still limited, though we saw with Covid that we can adjust to major external forces posed upon our society. Hence there is no reason to lean backward, change is possible, every tenth of degree less of warming will reduce the risks waiting for us. In this newsletter you will read more about glimpses of hope and potential pathways of change at our university.

Kind regards,
Roderik van de Wal

Sustainability Dialogue: Citizen engagement in the energy transition - 10 November

In this Sustainability Dialogue we go beyond narrow understandings of citizen engagement as ‘public participation’. Instead we seek to open the conversation around the question i) ‘what’ citizens citizen engagement in the energy transition (in the future can) consist of, ii) what this implies for the forms, processes of citizen engagements, and iii) what this suggests for ways in which researchers can contribute to more meaningful and effective forms of citizen engagement.

The topic will be introduced through short pitches and will be moderated by prof. dr. Albert Meijer. Speakers include:

  • Annelies Huygen, professor Energy Markets and Regulation (REBO)
  • Irene Bronsvoort, PhD candidate 'Rethinking citizen engagement for an inclusive energy transition' (Urban Futures Studio & Copernicus, GEO)
  • Dr Sanne Akerboom, assistant professor of Regulation and Governance of the Energy Transition (Copernicus Institute, GEO)

Join us for an interdisciplinary discussion followed by drinks!

Pathways Café - 8 December

December is the month to get together in the warmth, so join us at the upcoming Pathways Café at Café Minnaert (Leuvenlaan 4) on 8 December 16:00 hrs!

Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen, photographer of our new main image of the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe (Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe), will join us to tell us more about his work on social and environmental projects, like sea level rise, waste and food.

UtrechtInc also presents itself. UtrechtInc is the startup incubator of Utrecht Science Park. Two science-based startups will share their own experience. Bas Alterna is working on Space Accountants who identifies polluters of plastic waste in the ocean through past and real-time waste tracking enabled via satellite data. The other startup is Oiconomy, which will be presented by Anna Walker. In a world striving for more sustainable product solutions, Oiconomy Pricing enables companies to put a price tag on the impacts of their products, covering the planet, people and prosperity.

Besides meeting each other, there is also an Open Podium, where different kinds of groups and initiatives can pitch their ideas and observations.

Interview with Sustainability Education & Engagement Community - What are we educating towards?

Sustainability Education and Engagement is one of Pathways to Sustainability's new communities. What are their ideas and plans? A good reason to have a conversation with two of the four community leaders, Sebastiaan Steenman and Erik van Sebille.

"The students we educate at the university are the leaders, thinkers, entrepreneurs and teachers of the future. We believe that in their program they should develop knowledge and skills to address sustainability issues and make an impact."
