| Annual Report 2020 N.W. Posthumus Institute online
|
|
The N.W. Posthumus Institute presents you its Annual Report over 2020. The report describes the activities, events, and results of both the N.W. Posthumus PhD Training Programme as well as the courses delivered within the Research Master programme of the N.W. Posthumus Institute over 2020. Also, this annual report contains the financial overview over the past year and an overview of dissertations, successfully defended by Posthumus Graduates at various universities in the Netherlands and Flanders.

| RICH Valorisation Prize Awarded to Angelique Janssens
|
|
On September 28, Angélique Janssens and her team were awarded the RICH high impact research valorisation award for the citizen science project Amsterdamse doodsoorzaken 1854 - 1940. The now completed project was a 4.5 year endeavour in which hundreds of volunteers created a database of all persons who died in Amsterdam between 1854 and 1940, involving over 660,000 individuals. The project was carried out on the platform Velehanden.nl. The team had daily exchanges with the volunteers, combined with regular lectures, social exchanges and a newsletter. We of course congratulate Angelique and her team with this great achievement!

| Arnoud Jensen receives PhD Fellowship from FWO
|
|
Posthumus-participant Arnoud Jensen (University of Antwerp) very recently received a PhD Fellowship in fundamental research from the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) for his research project 'Peasants into Stewards'. The aim of these fellowships is to enable young researchers to become independent critical scientists. We congratulate Arnoud with this achievement!

Call for Papers Datini-ESTER Advanced Seminar 2022 - deadline 15 October!
|
|
Fondazione Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica “F. Datini” and the European School for Training in Economic and Social Historical Research (ESTER) announce their sixth jointly-organized Datini-ESTER Advanced Seminar for economic and social historians, to be held on 8-13 May 2022, in Prato (Italy) on the theme of “Economic Innovations”. The topic of the seminar is closely related to the theme of the congress organized yearly by the “F. Datini” International Institute of Economic History, which in 2022 is devoted to ‘The Knowledge Economy. Innovation, Productivity and Economic Growth’. Papers can cover any relevant aspect and any period from Antiquity until today and should be submitted ultimately 15 October 2021.

| Lecture and Master Class by Professor Kapil Raj (Leiden, 22-23 November) - Save the date!
|
|
On 22 and 23 November, Melinda Susanto and Neilabh Sinha will organise a lecture and a masterclass by Kapil Raj, Professor of the History of Science at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. This event is organised with the “Routes and Roots in Colonial and Global History” network of N.W. Posthumus Institute. The title of Raj’s lecture is “Circulation as Relational History” (22 November, late afternoon). The masterclass (23 November) is aimed at junior members of the N.W. Posthumus Institute, with a maximum of 12 participants. The theme of the masterclass is “Natural knowledge: data, objects, and persons in global knowledge networks”. | XIXde Colloquium ‘De Brabantse Stad’
|
| De Belgisch-Nederlandse ‘Stichting Colloquium De Brabantse Stad’ organiseert op 15 en 16 oktober 2021 haar driejaarlijkse internationale bijeenkomst waarop diverse aspecten van de geschiedenis van de steden en van het stedelijke leven in het oude hertogdom Brabant onder de loep worden genomen. Dit (inmiddels 19e) colloquium vindt plaats aan de Université Saint-Louis en richt de aandacht op de stedelijke en vorstelijke ruimte in het hertogdom Brabant in de late middeleeuwen en de vroegmoderne tijd.

WS ‘Health and Well-being in Cities of Low Countries’
|
| On 22 October 2021, Bart Lambert (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Jan Dumolyn (Ghent University), and Heidi Deneweth (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) will organize the Workshop ‘Health and Well-being in the Cities of the Low Countries (Late Middle Ages-Twentieth Century)’ at the Stadsmuseum Gent (Ghent City Museum). At this workshop, a selection of Dutch and Flemish researchers will present their findings on specific topics regarding health and well-being in cities of the Low Countries from the late Middle Ages until the recent past.

| De Vlaams-Nederlandse Vereniging voor Nieuwe Geschiedenis organiseert op 29 oktober 2021 haar Jaarcongres in het hoofdgebouw van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Thema van het Jaarcongres 2021 is ‘Afval bestaat niet! De circulaire economie in de vroegmoderne Nederlanden’. Het congres vindt plaats in samenwerking met de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, het Environmental Humanities Centre en Clue+.

| WS '"Passanten" and preindustrial migration'
|
| The organisers of the invitational hybrid workshop ‘“Passanten” and transient migration in preindustrial Europe and beyond’, to be hosted by the University of Warwick on 26 November 2021, call for papers and participants. In this workshop, the participants will explore the concept of passanten and its different iterations in history, discussing the meaning of and changes in transient migration in early modern European cities and parishes and beyond.

| The Research Group ‘Institutions for Collective Action’ at the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam organises a specialised workshop dedicated to the study of institutions for collective action (ICAs), or institutional arrangements that are formed by groups of people in order to overcome certain common problems over an extended period of time by setting certain rules regarding access to the group (membership), use of the resources and services the group owns collectively, and management of these resources and services.

| Call for abstracts Early Career Symposium ‘Hansards in the World' - deadline 31 Oct. 2021

| For the Early Career Symposium ‘Hansards in the World: Continuity and Discontinuity on the Intellectual, Cultural, and Economic Frontiers of the Early Modern Hanse’ the organisers (Alexander Collin Mphil, University of Amsterdam and Suzie Hermán MA, Princeton University) welcome contributions from PhD students and early career researchers and are keen to hear from applicants who might not consider themselves as Hanse historians. The symposium will take place on 20-21 January 2022 at the University of Amsterdam. Abstracts should be submitted by 31 October 2021.

| Development of Program and Seminar Series

| The UU-TUe-WUR Strategic Alliance has undertaken a project to develop a research program on Deep Transitions, focusing on boosting the transition towards a sustainable and inclusive society, based on a long-term analysis of past, present and future explorations. Together with their societal partners from a range of private and public sector organisations, the organisers would like to implement this program in Spring 2022, and also to invite you to contribute to the development of the research program.

| The 19th World Economic History Congress will be held in Paris, France on 25-29 July 2022. WEHC 2022 will address “resources” (natural, material, immaterial and human (work and skills)) as one of the main challenges of the contemporary world. Various calls for abstracts for this conference are currently open. Deadline for all calls is 1 December 2021.
